How to Fight off a Bear, Lion, and Wolfpack with a Knife

Let's be realistic: Your chances of repelling a seriously upset bear, mountain lion, or pack of coyotes are no better than finding a unicorn in a flock of moose. But with a knife in your hand, you have at least a chance to fight (even if a pinch of fairy dust would not hurt). Robert Young Pelton thought about it more than most. Warzone journalist and best-selling author of the world's most dangerous places owns DPx Gear and designs heavy-duty knives - one of which is a favorite of hog hunters, who know what's best in make. "A quick kill requires a deep, open wound - ideally right in the heart," says Pelton, "to lower the systolic blood pressure and deprive the brain of oxygen from the beast." But that's not the only way to make an opponent on all fours. Think twice before taking a bite out of your skin.

Mountain lion
"A mountain lion grabs prey with jaws and forepaws to crush his neck," says Pelton, who has been harassed by big cats in East Africa and British Columbia. "In the meantime, they are trying to rip you up with their hind legs." Forget about killing such a kitty. Instead, says Pelton, "break the attack and scare the cat away." Bear-hugging the animal tightly to protect the head and organs, and stab the eyes, push the blade into the mouth and throat, and sting as quickly and as often as you can.
Bear
Two strategies are common in the accounts of people who are successfully fighting a bear attack with a knife. First, the hand that does not hold the knife is used, often in a sacrificial way, to arm the bear's head or shake his fist in his mouth. And second, the knife is used to stab the bear repeatedly - "wildly, desperately," suggests Pelton - around the neck and head.
Coyote or wolf

Canines go out in groups and go for the rump or the legs, so face the animal head-on. Keep the grumpy jaws away from you, and stab by the side where you would place a ball, into the hard, gnarled heart. "And do not poke," says Pelton. "Imagine a 6-inch stitch in the chest and hit hard." Lift the knife back and forth to create maximum tissue trauma, then remove it quickly for rapid blood loss.
